Crime crackdown is a success

Saturday, 21 November 2009 19:19

A CRACKDOWN on burglary, car crime and robbery in Chipping Norton and throughout West Oxfordshire has seen these crimes fall by more than ten per cent in the district, compared to this time last year.

The Safer Communities Partnership launched Operation Jugular in July, following an increase in such crimes.

The partnership comprises West Oxfordshire District Council, Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire County Council, Thames Valley Partnership, Thames Valley Magistrates Court Service, Thames Valley Probation Service, Oxfordshire Youth Offending Service, South West Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, Cherwell Valley Primary Care Trust, North East Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, Oxfordshire Race Equality Council, Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team and Cottsway Housing Ltd.

Thames Valley Police’s Detective Sergeant Craig Kirby, leading the operation, said: “We are extremely pleased with the results of this operation, which has involved many officers working hard to raise crime reduction awareness around burglary and theft in our local communities.

“We’ve also been focusing on the importance of information we receive from residents in rural areas who are more alert to strangers in their villages.

“We continue to ask them to report suspicious incidents and people to us.”

Crime prevention and reduction adviser, Bill Butcher, said: “Unfortunately we are still seeing thefts from vehicles where the driver has left valuable items on display.

“With Christmas coming we are reminding people, once again, not to leave bags of shopping or any items in view in their cars.”

The partnership is selling SelectaDNA property marking kits to the public for £15.

These can be used to security mark valuables and register them on a secure database.

If the valuables are stolen and the police recover them, officers can find the owner’s details on the database.

Residents can receive crime alerts for their neighbourhood through Community Messaging at www.tvpcommunitymessaging.org

Renault to sell team, stay as engine supplier?

Sunday, 15 November 2009 16:58

Renault may be considering the sale of its Enstone based Formula One team but staying on the grid as an engine supplier only.

That is according to the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell, while naming two prospective buyers for the French carmaker's team.

One buyer was identified as Gerard Lopez, co-founder of venture capital firm Mangrove, and the other a Russian by the name of Andrej Krajnik, who is linked with the existing Renault sponsor Megafon.

F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone told the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper before leaving Brazil last weekend that he "just talked to a guy who wants to buy one of the teams".

Baguette awarded Renault test

Saturday, 14 November 2009 11:35

Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion Bertrand Baguette will make his formula one debut when he tests for the Renault team at Jerez next month.

The Belgian is expected to run in an R29 during the first day of testing at the Spanish circuit and he says it will be a childhood dream come true.

"This will be a great first for me," said Baguette.

"It's all my childhood dreams come true and, at the same time, it's every racing driver's ultimate goal.

"It's thanks to Renault that I was able to get into single-seater racing, by winning a programme set up by Renault in Belgium to discover up-and-coming young talent from karting.

"Since then, I've driven every Renault single-seater, from Formula Renault 1.6 to Formula Renault 3.5 via Formula Renault 2.0.

"Driving the Renault F1 R29 kind of completes the set as far as I'm concerned.

"The first few laps in F1 must be really unbelievable, with a lighter, more powerful car that has just phenomenal cornering speeds.

"I'll have everything to learn, not just the car itself, but also a new environment, lots of new parameters, a different way of working.

"The only thing I will be familiar with will be the Jerez circuit."

Baguette is working towards his debut in a grand prix car by completing a physical training programme and he is expected to pay a visit to Renault's Enstone factory for a briefing.

"The most important thing for me is not really driving the fastest possible lap," he added.

"The aim of this day will be to work hard with the team and to carry out the test programme that Renault F1 team is going to define seriously and professionally.

"Rather than my outright speed, it will be my ability to analyse the car's handling and my communication with the members of the team that will be gauged. I can't wait.

"I'm going to have to take things one step at a time and be cautious. It's a terrific opportunity to be able to take part in testing with a team as prestigious as the Renault F1 team."
