The Peoples Rail Campaign
The national campaign for a publicly accountable rail network
An announcement from The People's Rail Campaign:
This is a national campaign, launched by the Co- operative Party in June 2008 to give us the British public real power over the rail network in this country.
Long suffering rail users have seen Network Rail pay excessive bonuses to its Senior Executives whilst the Rail Regulator reported in 2008 an efficiency gap of £1.1 billion. After leaving thousands of passengers stranded through its failures in New Year 2008, a record fine of £14m was imposed on Network Rail by the Regulator. Its Board is not accountable to passengers.
The British public deserves much better than this. The Co-operative Party believes Network Rail should become a consumer mutual with rail users and taxpayers becoming members and electing its Council. The campaign has attracted much parliamentary and national support and already Network Rail have announced a review of the way they are governed.
Martin Tiedemann, Co-op Party Campaigns Officer, explained at a recent meeting how to mobilize local opinion to improve rail services nationally and locally. A determined campaign by Witney Constituency Labour Party and the Co Operative Party could make a real difference to the quality of service on the Cotswold and other local lines.
